Toenail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis,  is a fungal infection that causes them to become thickened, discolored, and brittle. It develops when fungi invade through tiny cracks in the nail or surrounding skin. Warm, moist environments, such as sweaty shoes or public showers, encourage its growth. Symptoms include yellowing, crumbling edges, and a foul odor. Risk factors include diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system. A podiatrist can diagnose the infection, trim and clean the affected nails, and prescribe topical or oral treatments to eliminate the fungus. If left untreated, the infection can spread and cause discomfort.
